What is 11-J?

The mass protests on July 11, 2021 signified a monumental moment in Cuba’s history. Information disseminated through social networks, Cubans from all corners of the island came out to demand change after years of repression and impoverishment.

The different between this protest and other, previous protests is that through the dissemination of information through social media allowed it to not be led by a single person or organization, but rather, to organically unite people over a shared sentiment of wanting to end the repressive rule, amplified by the pandemic. The government’s reaction also defined the protest, as their response consisted of mass arrests and the imprisonment of political prisoners, including minors, as well as the implementation of a Penal Code that further criminalized dissidents.

These events have led even more people into exile, and also contributed to a severe decline in the mental health of Cubans. As a result of the increased repression by the government, there is a greater weariness that is fueling the desire for change.

Why are we marching digitally?

Given that it is one year after the protests, it is important to provide a safe space so that Cubans can protest without putting their lives, personal integrity and freedom at risk. For this reason, People in Need has created a digital forum for people both inside and outside of Cuba to unite and demand a change for Cuba. People In Need habilita un espacio digital para que las personas, tanto dentro o fuera de Cuba, puedan unirse y manifestarse a favor de un cambio para Cuba.
